The Different Types of Mouthguards

Last Updated on April 23, 2022 by Joshua Poole

What kind of mouthguard is best for you? There are a variety of types of mouthguards on the market all claiming to offer protection and comfort while playing sports. It can be exhausting to wade through the endless amounts of information online to choose the right mouthguard. Confused about the difference between a boil and bite mouthguard and a custom mouthguard?

This article will show you the different types of mouthguards available, the advantages and disadvantages of each one, along with our recommendation on the best type to get.

3 Common Types of Mouthguards

Stock Mouthguards

Stock Mouthguards are one-size-fits-all mouthguards that can be purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies and retail stores. While they have the advantage of being inexpensive, they are the least effective type of mouthguard for comfort and protection.

Stock Mouthguards come in limited sizes meaning they often do not fit the individual player well, which often causes discomfort and irritation of the gums. They also often hinder breathing and speech as they require the wearer to keep their jaws closed to hold the mouthguard in place.

Boil and Bite Mouthguards

Boil and Bite Mouthguards can also be purchased from retailers and pharmacies and are similarly a quick-fix approach alternative to custom mouthguards. Boil and Bite Mouthguards involve buying a plastic mouthguard, which you then have to boil in hot water and then mould to the shape of your teeth. While Boil and Bite Mouthguards are more fitted than stock mouthguards, when bought from general retailers they are still made of cheap hard plastic, which often causes discomfort and does not offer complete protection.

While standard Boil and Bite Mouthguards give little to no protection and are made from hard, uncomfortable plastic, we offer a premium Boil and Bite Range, made from the same quality materials as our custom made mouthguards. They also come in a range of different colours and designs so wearers can showcase their personality on the field. Want to browse our premium Boil and Bite Range? Shop the full range here.

Custom Mouthguards

Custom Mouthguards are crafted by dental technicians who use their expertise and start-of-the-art technology to create a custom-fitted mouthguard using impressions taken from the individual’s mouth, which are then used to generate an exact replica and from that replica a custom made mouthguard is created. They provide the highest level of protection and comfort and are suitable for all sports. Custom mouthguards are the only mouthguard type recommended by the Australian Dental Association as they are proven to protect against dental injury. While custom mouthguards do come with a heftier price tag than over the counter alternatives, paying for a quality mouthguard is an investment in your future smile.
